Thank you to everyone who contacted me about the debate and vote on Carbon Budget 7 on 24 June 2026. I appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns about climate change, as well as issues such as the net zero economy and energy bills, which I know are some of the most important issues we are facing today and in the long term.
I welcome that the Government accepted the independent Climate Change Committee’s recommendation to set the seventh carbon budget at a level consistent with reducing emissions by 87% by 2040, as part of the UK’s legally binding pathway to reach net zero by 2050. This is a science‑led decision which will help ensure the UK meets its international commitments while protecting the environment for future generations.
You will be pleased to know that following the debate on Carbon Budget 7 – and against the backdrop of a Met Office extreme heat warning that made clear climate change is not simply a worry for the future, but something that is affecting us here and now – the House of Commons voted to approve the budget, passing it into law.
Crucially, this carbon budget will also help us reduce our reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets. The Government’s approach emphasises strengthening the UK’s energy security by accelerating the transition to clean, home‑grown energy sources, which can help shield households and businesses from future price shocks. At the same time, it is clear from the evidence provided by the Climate Change Committee that taking action on net zero is expected to deliver long‑term economic benefits, with the overall gains outweighing the costs.
More broadly, the transition to a low‑carbon economy is an opportunity to support economic growth, create skilled jobs, improve public health through better air quality, and protect the UK’s natural environment. And by legislating an ambitious level now, we provide the long-term certainty that will only encourage investment and growth.
I am pleased that the Government’s existing plans already provide a strong starting point for meeting our emissions reduction targets and that it will set out further detail in a delivery plan in due course. I believe the ambition set out in Carbon Budget 7 is a major opportunity to improve people’s lives today, while avoiding climate disaster for future generations.
