I am incredibly glad the ceasefire between Israel and Iran continues to hold.

I know in June, while the conflict between Iran and Israel was at its most heightened, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office was working flat out to find space for diplomacy. I understand this included meetings with the Israeli Government, the Iranian Government and other international partners across the Middle East, Europe, and the US.

I do not believe military action will put to an end Iran’s nuclear capabilities, which is why I continue to support the Government’s efforts to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons through diplomacy. Further negotiations are essential and inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency must be allowed to continue their work. Trust needs to be built to come to a diplomatic solution that puts an end to Iran’s nuclear programme and ensures a secure Israel at peace with its neighbours.

I know the Government has consistently stressed throughout the conflict between Israel and Iran, and the conflict in Gaza, that all sides must abide by international law. In Gaza, this has included efforts by the UK Government to press the Israeli Government to allow the sustained, unimpeded flow of aid into Gaza, delivered by the UN. I am clear that civilians must be protected.

You can read my most recent statement on Gaza and the Government’s Plan for Peace in the Middle East here.

The ceasefire between Israel and Iran offers a much-needed moment of hope. This hope must extend to Gaza. We need a ceasefire now. I believe this remains the best way to end the appalling suffering in Gaza, improve the deteriorating situation in the West Bank and to bring the hostages back to their families.
