Thank you to everyone who contacted me about the welfare of greyhounds.

The UK is a nation of animal lovers, and I welcome the Government’s plan to deliver the most ambitious programme for animal welfare in a generation.

As I am sure you know, the welfare of greyhounds in England is protected by the Animal Welfare Act 2006. This allows action to be taken where there is evidence of cruelty to an animal, such as greyhounds, or a failure to provide for that animal’s welfare needs.

Despite this, I am aware that there remain concerns around greyhound racing and welfare.

However, I recognise that the sport is already attempting to address many of these issues – including through the Greyhound Board of Great Britain’s welfare strategy ‘A Good Life for Every Greyhound’. This strategy focuses not only on reducing risks of injury but also developing and implementing new management practices to improve the welfare of greyhounds throughout their lives, including after they have finished racing.

I understand that the Government are carefully monitoring programmes implemented by those involved in the sport and will take proportionate, sensible, and effective action if needed. I welcome the findings that the long-term trend for the total number of greyhounds that have died at racetracks has shown a decline, and I know the Government will continue to monitor this closely.

More broadly, I support the Government’s pledges to end illegal smuggling of dogs and cats and illegal puppy farming.

Please be assured I will continue to support strengthening animal welfare and I will follow developments on this closely.
