Thank you to those who have contacted me to raise concerns about the future visit of Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince to the UK.

I appreciate your engagement and dedication to holding the Government accountable for its foreign policy decisions, particularly when it comes to matters as crucial as international relations.

I share your concerns about the human rights situation in Saudi Arabia, especially the ongoing issues related to the use of the death penalty and the recent spike in the number of executions taking place. I stand unequivocally against the death penalty wherever it is used in the world; the taking of human life as punishment, regardless of the crime, is a gross breach of a person’s human rights.

Saudi Arabia remains a Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) human rights priority country, particularly because of the use of the death penalty and restrictions on freedom of expression.

It is a long-standing UK policy to oppose the death penalty in all circumstances in all countries as a matter of principle. The Government said it seeks to engage the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and support positive reform. Key areas include promoting freedom of religious belief, lobbying on individual human rights cases of concern, and encouraging justice reforms.

As your Member of Parliament, I strongly believe in the importance of upholding human rights and the rule of law on the global stage. The UK must use its diplomatic influence to encourage improvements in Saudi Arabia’s human rights record and promote transparency in their justice system.

In September 2023, the Government confirmed that the Prime Minister and the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman held a call on 17 August and agreed to meet in person at the earliest opportunity.

I urge ministers to use the relationship between our two countries to press for change and reform.

Thank you once again to everyone who has contacted me about this issue.
