Thank you to all who have contacted me about guidance for schools on matters relating to gender.

As you may know, draft guidance was expected to be published for consultation before the end of the summer term, but on 20 July, the Government announced that it has decided to “allow more time”. It is advising schools and colleges to “proceed with extreme caution” in the meantime.

I believe schools, parents, teachers and pupils need greater clarity around this issue. There are conflicting reports about what the guidance is expected to include, and the lack of certainty over timing is causing further anxiety and concern in my view.

I worry that schools are being left with little advice on how to keep children and young people safeguarded and cared for. The union Association of School and College Leaders says it has been calling on the Government to provide guidance on gender for at least five years.

Any guidance on gender must be developed with sensitivity and respect to all pupils, including trans pupils. The most important thing is the safety and wellbeing of children. I support calls on the Government to take a big step towards this by finally publishing the guidance. I assure you I will follow developments closely.

Thank you once again to all who have contacted me about this issue.
