Thank you to all those who have contacted me about the removal of the English National Opera’s NPO (National Portfolio Organisation) status.

I am concerned that, right now, our essential cultural institutions are facing a perfect storm of falling donations, increased operating costs, a cost-of-living squeeze on audiences and a decade of Government cuts to the arts. These are the institutions that give us pride, and which are at the core of our national identity. I feel there has been too much upheaval over recent months and cultural organisations deserve more respect than they have been shown of late.

I appreciate that the decision to remove the status of the English National Opera (ENO) as an NPO is disappointing to many and that people feel strongly about this matter. I understand the ENO provides accessible and affordable performances to the British public, including free tickets to people under the age of 21 and relaxed performances for those with sensory needs.

I am dissatisfied by the manner in which this decision has been handled and communicated, without consultation. I do believe, however, that individual decisions are for the Arts Council England to make based on the performance, sustainability and governance of individual organisations. I am also concerned about the current status of the independence of the Arts Council which is supposed to be an arm’s length Government body.

The Government states this decision was made in line with plans to tackle cultural disparities, and its broad funding formula was going to lead to reductions in funding in London and increases elsewhere. It has also increased funding for Arts Council England overall.

In my view, it is positive to see the expansion of opportunities for arts organisations nationwide, the addressing of regional funding imbalances and the addition of many excellent organisations to make the NPO programme more representative.

I am aware that the Government has committed to providing organisations leaving the portfolio with transitional funding until October 2023.

Thank you once again for contacting me about this issue.
