Thank you so much to everyone who has contacted me about last week’s A-level results. I received emails from many young people who have been personally affected by the results fiasco and know how much stress it has caused them and their teachers.
As you will no doubt be aware, the Government has now performed a U-turn on this and students’ A-level and GCSE grades will be awarded based on teacher assessments.
Although this is a great victory for the thousands of students, teachers and their supporters who have created petitions and protested over the weekend, it is totally unacceptable that it has taken the Government so long to reach this decision when it has had months to plan.
My Labour colleagues and I have been calling for urgent action since the mass downgrading of A-level results became apparent at the end of last week. The Tories’ handling of this has been a fiasco and the Government has seriously let our young people down. Students and universities now need clarity and support to ensure that nobody is robbed of the opportunities they deserve.
