I know that many of my constituents in Lewisham Deptford share my concern about climate change and the role which the UK plays in the global effort to reduce carbon emissions.

I recently signed an open letter to Claire Perry MP, the Minister of State for Energy and Clean Growth, to ensure that the UK’s carbon budgets and emissions trajectory are in line with the nation’s commitments as a signatory to the 2015 Paris Agreement.

At Labour Party Conference, Jeremy Corbyn confirmed Labour’s commitment to bringing the UK’s carbon emissions in line with the terms of the Paris Agreement and reducing the UK’s net carbon emissions to 0 by 2050. Under the Conservatives, the UK’s carbon budgets are currently based on the goal of cutting carbon emissions by only 80% by 2050.

This is part of a wider commitment by the Labour Party to prioritise environmental concerns, including investment in Green energy sources, such as offshore and onshore wind, solar energy and home energy efficiency, in turn creating 400,000 new Green Jobs.

Alongside my Labour colleagues, I will continue to press the government to do more to protect our environment.
