Thank you to everyone who has contacted me recently about the Home Office’s decision to deport Kweku Adoboli.

A Home Office spokesperson has said that the Government does not comment on specific cases but that all foreign nationals who are given a custodial sentence will be considered for removal.

Mr Adoboli is a Ghanaian national who has resided in the UK since the age of 12. Mr Adoboli was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2012 for two counts of fraud, however his supporters highlight his positive contribution to society since his release – educating others in the community, including in the financial services industry, to learn from his mistakes.

I appreciate this must be a distressing time for Mr Adoboli, his friends, family and supporters. There has been a strong display of public opinion on this case, demonstrated by a 38 Degrees petition to stop the deportation of Mr Adoboli, which has gathered over 73,000 signatures.

I understand from media reports that lawyers representing Mr Adoboli intend to pursue a judicial review claim to attempt to stop the deportation. I have also seen that Mr Adoboli was granted temporary reprieve from deportation, pending the judicial review outcome. He is expected to be released from immigration detention in the coming days.
