Vicky Foxcroft MP for Lewisham Deptford & Shadow Minister for Disabled People
Many people have been in touch with me recently about the issue of British citizenship fees for children. This is a subject I feel strongly about and I therefore share these concerns entirely.
Registration fees for citizenship have risen sharply under the Conservatives since they have come to power. It is a scandal that children who qualify for British Citizenship are subject to such harsh and unaffordable fees of £1000 upwards to register formally as citizens, and this situation is compounded where multiple siblings need to apply.
I am also deeply concerned about the increasingly high rate of fees charged for immigration applications in the UK more widely. I know from my casework that this is a significant barrier for many people when making their applications. This policy is deliberate and simply wrong.
I can assure that my Labour colleagues and I will continue to pressure the Government to revise these fees and stop punishing those who are entitled to citizenship with excessive rates of charges.
