Vicky Foxcroft recently revealed that Conservative cuts to tax credits could affect up to 9,900 families in Lewisham Deptford. In the last few weeks the issue of changes to tax credits have been on a roller-coaster ride in both Houses of Parliament.

Vicky spoke out against the changes to tax credits during an Opposition Day Debate on the effects of the cuts to the poorest across the UK, you can watch her speech below:

Firstly the Government voted through the changes in the House of Commons. However, the Government were then defeated in the House of Lords as Labour  Peers blocked the Government changes until they had looked at the effect of the cuts on the country’s poorest.

The defeat was followed in the House of Commons by an Opposition Day Debate on the effect of tax credit changes, in which Vicky Foxcroft made a speech about the effect on families in Lewisham Deptford and across the country. When it came to the vote, 20 Conservative MPs crossed the floor and none voted against the Labour motion, meaning the Government have been forced to mitigate the impact of any changed to tax credits they make.

The Government have now stated they will set out their plans for tax credits in the Autumn Statement on the 25th November.
