Several buildings in Lewisham North still have unsafe exterior cladding. Previous Governments have tried and failed to solve this issue and six years on from the tragedy at Grenfell, leaseholders are fearful for their family’s safety.

Fire safety concerns has also contributed to the housing crisis as lenders are reluctant to offer mortgages on flats affected, leaving many unable to move on.

Earlier this week, I met with the Minister for Building Safety, Fire and Democracy Sam Dixon MP to discuss a provision announced in The King’s Speech 2026. She informed me that our Government will bring forward a cladding remediation bill to address the stalemate in many buildings.

The draft legislation seeks to address the stalemate seen in some developments where responsibility for the cost of cladding removal is disputed.

Alongside the Renters Rights Act (2026) and the Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act (2024), I am excited to see the Government sticking to its commitment to make housing more affordable. The cost of accommodation continues to be the biggest issue for my constituents and one I will ensure my colleagues in Government prioritise.
