On Thursday 29th November I joined the Lewisham Deptford CLP BAME Forum in welcoming David Lammy MP to the constituency to talk about the Windrush scandal.

The event, which we held at the 2000 Community Action Centre in Deptford, was very well attended by local residents and organisations.

I opened the proceedings with Isabel Cortes, co-chair of the BAME Forum. David spoke about his tireless campaigning and lobbying of the Government over Windrush and took questions from the audience.

We also heard from the Mayor of Lewisham, Damien Egan, and several local people who have been directly affected by the scandal. They have all come to me for assistance over the last few months and some of their cases are still ongoing, despite promises made by the Home Office that they would be dealt with much more quickly.

The evening was closed by Sophia Mangera, the other co-chair of the BAME Forum. Earlier this year Sophia moved a Lewisham Deptford CLP motion on Windrush at Labour Party conference which was passed unanimously. The motion called for the closure of detention centres and an end to destitution and the hostile environment.

Thank you to everyone who joined us on the night and to my team and the BAME Forum for organising. Special thanks also to Lorna Prentice at the 2000 Community Action Centre for hosting us.

My Labour colleagues and I will continue to hold the Government to account over the scandal and to help any constituents who have been affected. If you live in Lewisham Deptford and need assistance with your case, please contact my office.
