I have recently received a number of emails regarding the ongoing crisis in Yemen and how children are suffering as we continue to search for a political solution. Children in Yemen deserve the right to grow up in a country which is not divided by war and should not have to face disease, hunger and violence.

There is no military solution to this conflict and it is vital that a peaceful, negotiated resolution can be secured. The recent peace talks in Sweden and the adoption of Resolution 2451 by the UN Security Council in December 2018 are some of the few moments of hope in Yemen since the conflict began. The Government must now consider the next steps in brokering a ceasefire and, indeed, a political settlement for the whole country.

The Government must also fulfil its promise of assistance for those in need. Indeed, the UN estimates that almost 18 million people are food insecure and over 8 million people are at risk of starvation. Millions more also lack access to safe water and sanitation or adequate access to healthcare.

Resolving this situation could not be more urgent. The people of Yemen have suffered so much throughout this ongoing conflict and the Government must use its influence and play its part in bringing it to an end.

In 2017 I stood on a manifesto which outlined Labour’s aim to urge negotiations towards a political resolution. We continue to give our support and press the Government to maintain its urgency in seeking a solution to this ongoing crisis.

Thank you to everyone who has emailed me with their concerns regarding this issue.
