Today the Prime Minister tested her deal in the Commons yet again.

As you may recall, the Speaker had previously told Theresa May that she could not bring her deal back for another vote unless substantial changes were made. In order to circumvent this, the Government essentially separated the Withdrawal Agreement from the Political Declaration and asked the House to approve the former.

The motion we voted on complied with the EU Council’s statement of 22nd March that, unless the Withdrawal Agreement was approved by today, the UK must seek a further extension of Article 50 beyond 12th April or leave with no deal.

My Labour colleagues and I opposed this desperate attempt by the Prime Minister to force her failed Brexit plan through Parliament for an unbelievable third time.

Theresa May told MPs that this was our “last opportunity to guarantee Brexit”, but she failed to convince enough of us that her deal was the only way forward. She lost by 68 votes (286 for to 344 against).

On Monday we will look again at the options available to us and continue to seek an outcome which meets with sufficient approval from across the House.
