I’ve received many emails recently from constituents about violence on the Israel-Gaza border.

I am appalled by the deaths and injuries that have occurred in Gaza over recent weeks and I deplore the violence that we have seen take place. I am clear that all parties must commit to respecting peaceful protest, showing restraint and following international law.

There is a need to establish the facts around these events and I am supportive of an independent and transparent investigation.

These terrible events serve as yet another reminder of the need to work towards the two-state solution we all want to see, with a secure Israel living in peace alongside a viable state of Palestine and an end to the senseless cycle of violence.

This will require both sides – and the international community as a whole – to come together as a matter of urgency. It also requires both sides avoiding actions that put the two-state solution at risk and make peace harder to achieve. That means both an end to the blockade, occupation and settlements, and an end to rocket and terror attacks.

On 15 May, there was an Urgent Question on this subject in the House of Commons. The full transcript of the debate can be read here: https://hansard.parliament.uk/commons/2018-05-15/debates/D6170F50-D03A-40D8-B257-5C2A55493561/GazaBorderViolence.

I will continue to follow the situation in Gaza closely and continue to press the Government to take whatever steps it can to bring about an immediate return to meaningful negotiations towards a wider diplomatic resolution.
